Kentucky Youth Storytelling Showcase:
Rules & Suggestions

Rules

• Stories must be 5 – 10 minutes in length.

• Stories must be told, not read.

• Kentucky Youth Storytelling participants must be age 6 - 17 years old on November 3rd, 2008.

• Any school/organization/family wishing to send in a DVD/Video Semi-Final Entry, must submit that entry prior to midnight January 23, 2008.

• A young storyteller can only participate in one semi-final venue.

• All participating schools/organizations/families must be located within Kentucky.

• Any school/organization/family wishing to have young people participate in a regional semi-final venue must electronically submit or postmark a completed entry form by January 23, 2008.

• At the State Championship Level, all entrants will be required to seek written permission of the story’s author, whether the story is in print or from a non-print source. Prior to consideration, written proof of permission from the story’s author or publisher is required before a young storyteller will be considered for a performance at the National Youth Storytelling Showcase. No permission is needed for stories created by the storyteller or stories retold from public domain sources.

• At least one parent, guardian, or other responsible adult chaperone must accompany each young storyteller at all times during the semi-final and state championship competitions. No Exceptions.

• Snow-Day Competition Cancellation – IF any venue is forced to cancel due to inclement weather, registered competitors may submit a DVD/Video Entry before March 15, 2008. Only those individuals who were registered for the canceled venue may submit a video entry. A winner for a cancelled venue will be chosen from these DVD/Video entries.

• Snow-Day Competitor Cancellation – IF any competitor is forced to cancel, due to inclement weather closing school or roads, that competitor may submit a DVD/VHS entry by March 15, 2008. These entries will automatically be entered into the general DVD/VHS entry pool.

Suggestions

• Schools/organizations/families are encouraged to create or participate in local storytelling events, guilds, or local organization showcases in order to discover talented young storytellers. • Plan classroom or social activities that involve storytelling by and with young people to find talent and cultivate talent.
